Argumentative Articles AOW (Gallery Walk, 3/16)

To me, the most pressing article for today’s gallery walk would be Aine’s which discusses how we should treat undocumented children. For the past few years, the US has been having difficulties with keeping illegal immigration in check. As time goes on, more and more illegal immigrants cross the US/Mexico border, often smuggling their children in too to keep their family together. This smuggling can often cause children to be physically abused, raped, and beaten. The PRO side of this article argues that this sort of immigration should be encouraged, as there are many gangs and criminals in Mexico that make Mexico a very dangerous place for children. They claim that these children should be encouraged to come to the US in order to not have their life at risk. The CON side of the article argues that promoting Illegal immigration will cause even more children to suffer being smuggled just to find a place in the US and that we should improve convince the Mexican government to improve their country while discouraging illegal immigration.

The first (pro) side of the article says that we shouldn’t deny all children from being able to cross borders, but if it improves their quality of life, they should be allowed into the US. The author reminds the audience about Mexico’s crime problems, and how those problems are seriously threatening the lives of people, especially children, who are easy targets for criminals.

The second side of my article says that we should discourage all people from illegally crossing the US/Mexico border. The author claims that encouraging illegal immigration also promotes crime in Mexico, causing a vicious cycle of crime. To support their claim, the author tells the audience about supposed criminals referred to as “coyotes” who are people who make money off smuggling people across the border. These kinds of people usually are also involved in drug trafficking, along with their human trafficking. Given this evidence, the author concludes that we should prohibit illegal immigration, as it would help both Mexico and the United state’s residents.

This impacts my life because it can benefit the area around me. I live in a Chicago suburb, and Chicago has been having a lot of crime and drug problems in the last few years. If criminals are discouraged from trafficking humans, their drug trafficking business may lose traction. The fewer drug crimes there are where I live, the safer I and everyone else around me will be.
