"One Race" - To kill a Mockingbird - Found poetry

You may think otherwise, but,

Some Negroes lie, some Negroes are immoral,
some Negro men are not to be trusted around women—
black or white
be he any color of the rainbow,

There is not a person
who has never told a lie,
who has never done an immoral thing,
there is no man living who has never looked upon a woman without desire

Instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand
you just hold your head high and keep those fists down
It's when you know you're licked before you begin,
but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what.

The one place where a man ought to get a square deal is in a courtroom,
people have a way of carrying their resentments right into a jury box.
they couldn't be fair if they tried.

but let me tell you something and don’t you forget it—
I think there's just one kind of folks -
Folks.
this is a truth that applies to the human race and to no particular race of men--
The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience

  1. I loved how you pulled different quotes out that sounded similar, and let them flow together. And how you found the quote "people have a way of carrying their resentments right into a jury box." That quote, to me, changes the stanza completely (in a good way of course) and really sticks in your mind.

  2. This is a good way of putting the quotes together. It fits with book and gives a good and positive message.

  3. My found poem is sort of formatted as a speech, which comes directly from Atticus's mind. All throughout TKAM, there are several themes that pop up multiple times, and one of those is race, which seems to be brought up every other chapter (in part 2, at least). In this "speech" Atticus addresses the courtroom, and how it should be fair for everyone, no matter what their skin color is. I imagined that through all his years of being a lawyer, Atticus has probably dealt with cases like Tom's, and most likely will in the future (future, in terms of book).

  4. I like how most of the quotes are put together, but some of the quotes are full sentences whose ideas are already stated in the book.

  5. I think that the poem was great. The quotes showed the equality and fairness that was represented in the title.
